"The Fifth Side: Conscious Leadership and the Use of Self "

    Date: Tuesday, February 27, 2018, 6:15PM

Location: Spring Valley Building: 4801 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016

    Evening Program Description:

Appreciating what truly enables leadership growth and organizational change and the link between them.

Conscious Leadership is emerging as a paradigm for managing the complexity of change, innovation and diversity in today’s global workplace. Coaches know that any leadership technique is limited by the level of awareness of the user. Awareness is the fifth side of the leadership matrix (leader – led – culture - methodology – awareness). Below the surface of awareness is where the leader’s blind spots, projections and bias reside. Most leaders know they should be open to and even seek feedback. Conscious leaders know “the led” are always giving them feedback within the context of the organizational culture. They have the awareness needed to observe, interpret and adjust without taking it personally. They are sensitive to how their own beliefs will “construct” what they see. They can put themselves in the other’s shoes and self-observe from the place of “the balcony.” They mitigate their own coping mechanisms that block this capacity of seeing, reflecting, learning and adjusting. Conscious leaders they have to be the change they want to see in the organization. The dysfunctions that stifle communication and innovation are a reflection of the same dysfunctions within the leader. Seeing and owning that connection with courage enables the inner shift that involves heart and spirit as well as mind.

By the close of this workshop you will:

    1.     Understanding the new principles of Conscious Leadership (CL)

    2.     Appreciating the relationship between leadership growth and organizational change

    3.     Applying CL in team building, coaching and change management issues – especially those the audience may be dealing with

Topic: Objectifying Trust: Seven Key Considerations

Trust is considered by many to be an essential element for developing and maintaining relationships, but describing what trust is can be hard. One reason for the challenge is that trust can mean many different things to different people, making it difficult to align expectations around behaviors commonly used to assess, or measure the presence of trust.

Join us for an interactive introduction to the Tree of Trust® diagnostic tool used to reveal and objectify factors critical to building trust, and the impact of those factors on the existence, or development of distrust. Based on three years of R&D by Paris think tank Institut Confiances, The Tree of Trust® is being used by industry and in government to uncover reasons for distrust that impact organizational performance, while revealing opportunities to develop trust and improve professional relationships.

During this session, participants will be engaged in an examination of the seven key factors that can have an impact on generating trust or distrust at individual, corporate, institutional, regional and global levels. At the core of the conversation will be here key questions:

    1. When relationships are impacted by issues involving trust, is the existence of distrust a consequence, or a cause of the issue?
    2. As OD practitioners, how can we quickly and accurately objectify and measure trust/distrust behaviors and practices at individual, team, or organizational levels?
    3. How can we raise clients’ consciousness about what to change in order to reinforce trust relations?

We hope you will join us to participate in the discussion.

Topic: VUCA as the Imperative for Vertical Development

In an age that can be characterized as immersing us all in a regular dose of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), there is a compelling argument to be made for leaders to intentionally explore their behavior through the perspective of adult development theory. In this session we will generate some practical take-aways vis-à-vis how we, as coaches, might support our clients in strengthening the capacities called-for by this reality.

    Presenter: Steve Heller

A PCC-credentialed member of the ICF, Steve served for many years on the Board of Directors of its Washington, DC chapter (including a term as its President). He obtained his Certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University in 2005. After six years as an Adjunct Faculty member for that program, Steve served as its Program Director from January of 2015 through early 2017. He is a team member of the group that coaches TED Fellows, provides leadership coaching to Fellows at the Halcyon Incubator, and coaches graduates of Back on My Feet’s revolutionary program for supporting people from homelessness to independence.

If you want to attend please RSVP by email to Peggy Linden, Coaching CoP co-leader: peggy.linden@gmail.com.

Changes:  We are changing the way we run the Coaching Community of Practice.  Those who receive notice they are on the attendance list will pay $5.00 by Venmo to reserve their place.  We will send instructions regarding using Venmo when you receive notice you are on the attendance list.  We will not be offering refunds.  We ask that cancellations be at least 48 hours in advance so we can contact those on the waiting list and give them sufficient notice to attend.  If necessary, last minute cancellations are appreciated so we can do the appropriate room set-up.

In order to balance who attends we delay notifying those on the attendance list for up to a week to include those who have not attended recently.  We also encourage new members to attend.  We apologize if you do not get on the attendance list each month and hope you understand that we want to include more members, not only those who responded quickly.  We limit our sessions to 30 attendees as we sit in a circle to encourage full participation. From now on those who are 'no-shows' or last minute cancellations will  be placed on the waiting list for future meetings until we have openings.   RSVP only if you want to attend, no need to send 'regrets.'

Please let us know if you are a new member or have not attended the last three or more sessions.  We are very grateful for your interest and support.

We need a few volunteers to help set up the room.  Please let me know if you can assist us at 6:00.

You will receive notification within the next seven days about whether you are on the list to attend or on the waiting list.  Also, please include the phone number where you can be reached if we need to contact you the day of the meeting.  Be sure to check your email for any updates if the weather is challenging or for any other changes that evening.

Topic: What It’s Like To Do International OD Work

Description:  Organization development work in countries outside of the United States appears to be increasing.  It often requires openness to different cultures and regions and people’s perspectives on the world of work and life.  It also includes data gathering, designing an OD intervention(s), facilitating the sessions, and managing the client, organizational, and cultural challenges.  In this session the very experienced presenters will explore how to successfully combine organizational development and international work, which is often not an easy task. It will also be an opportunity for you to share any experiences you may have had in doing this work and to learn from others if you haven’t done so.

Presenters:  Stephan Dix and Pam Ex

Stephan brings more than 25 years of work in OD and management for private and public sector organizations including USAID Global Health, the United Nations, and the World Bank. He has managed many millions of dollars for foreign humanitarian assistance, economic development, and community capacity building programs in the Middle East, the Caribbean, Africa, the South Pacific, Asia, and Europe.

He has facilitated office retreats, roundtables, workshops, focus groups, and team building events with Ambassadors, Presidents, Government Ministers, and Senior Executive Officers.

He has holds an MS degree in Development Management from American University, a Life and Career Coaching Certificate from the Coaches Training Institute, and a certificate in Organizational Development, Change Management, and Adult Training Skills from Georgetown University.  He speaks French, Arabic, and Haitian Creole.

Pam has extensive experience as a coach and trainer in the international workplace.  She has trained thousands of clients from 35 countries, including Ambassadors and CEOs in various industries and professions. Her work has included training leaders on global leadership competencies in their organizations.  In addition, her work has helped leaders increase their cross-cultural knowledge.  Pam has been a featured speaker at international conferences and she has been the author of international business articles.

She has an International MBA from the University of South Carolina and she is an ICF ACC certified coach.  She is also fluent in Portuguese and Spanish.

Topic: Storytelling - A Powerful Tool for Professional Success and Personal Fulfillment

Storytelling has long been used to educate, motivate, inspire and unify. It is perhaps the oldest and most organic form of passing knowledge and wisdom from one generation to the next. There is renewed interest in storytelling, as researchers have discovered a powerful link between the stories we tell and the outcomes we experience. In short, storytelling is not just descriptive – it is also predictive! The stories we tell about can:

    • Create a vision for personal and professional success
    • Galvanize support for an idea, proposal, project or initiative
    • Help leaders, supervisors and team members communicate a message to influence action and change

It is vital for personal and professional fulfillment and success to be mindful and intentional of the stories we tell about ourselves and our journey. That will be the focus of this session. It will be an experiential mini-workshop focused on helping participants begin to create the stories that will pave the path to personal fulfillment and professional success.

    Presenter:  Jackie Bsharah

In addition to her work as a consultant and executive coach, Jackie is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University where she was awarded the Tropaia Award for Outstanding Faculty. She teaches graduate courses on organizational leadership, effective team building, consulting skills and diversity and inclusion.
