Session:  Leadership Coaching and OD

Session Description:  Leadership coaching has become very widespread in organizations.  OD people who are coaches can bring additional value to this work.  What kinds of things need to happen that can increase the likelihood that this coaching will be successful and what may occur that can decrease this likelihood?  A panel who are both OD practitioners and leadership coaches will discuss their experiences and talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of their work. It will also be an opportunity for you to share your experiences, and if you haven’t been a leadership coach you can learn from others about their work.

Presenters:  Penny Potter, Aman Gohal, and Doug Hensch

Dr. Penny Potter is director of executive leadership education in the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being at George Mason University. One of Penny’s interests is in the positive impact on personal well-being of having truly human conversations, and the reciprocal impact on organizational well-being. Her interest was sparked by her doctoral research on the transformative learning and development of those who go through a coach training program. She extends that research in Mason’s Leadership Coaching for Organizational Well-Being coach certification program. Penny is also a Mason Coaching Fellow and an instructor in that program. 

Previous to joining Mason, Penny had been both an independent OD consultant-coach, as well as a senior program manager, consultant, and coach for a DC-based consulting company. She has extensive experience in development and management of leadership coaching programs for the federal government. Penny holds a PhD in human and organizational systems, an MS in organizational development, and a BS in psychology.


Dr. Gohal is an ICF Certified Executive Coach at the PCC level and has coached across all sectors.  She has been working in the field of leadership and organization development for the past 12 years.  She currently lead the design and development of two leadership immersion programs at Booz Allen, as well as its internal mentoring and coaching capability. She has a strong passion for human development, gender studies, sustainability and leadership development. 

Her doctoral dissertation focused on women’s leadership in sustainability.  She is a graduate of the AU/NTL Organization Development program, a Segal-Seashore fellow and A World-Wide Network for Gender Empowerment Fellow from Fielding Graduate University.  Her career highlights include serving as a coach in the U.S. Presidential Leadership Scholars program started by four U.S. Presidential Libraries to create social leaders that work across party lines.

Doug Hensch has expertise in coaching, facilitation, instructional design, and consulting.  He has created workshops that focus on resilience, strengths, well-being, and goals.  In addition, he has been called on to lead courses designed by his clients in the areas of consulting skills, presentations, conversations, and networking.  His philosophy is simple:  Set meaningful goals, identify your strengths, and work on them regularly. 

His clients have included Freddie Mac, NIH, PricewaterhouseCoopers, FDA, George Mason University, and Verizon.  Martin Seligman, Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, referred to him as one of his “most talented young colleagues.”  Doug has written the book, “Positively Resilient:  5 ½ secrets to Beat Stress, Overcome Obstacles, and Defeat Anxiety.” 

He received his Bachelor’s of Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master’s in Education and a Master’s in Organization Management from Temple University.  He is an International Coach Federation certified coach.
