"Diversity & Inclusion: Foundation for Forming a One-Workforce Organization" 

Presenters: Sylvia Ramirez Benatti and Annabelle Reitman

Program Description: 

This workshop focuses on providing you with the tools and information to help your organizations' staff to develop and strengthen their understanding and positive attitude towards workplace diversity focusing on building employee inclusion. Diversity needs to be seen as an asset. You will be introduced to the concept of a "one-workforce" organization where all employees and what they bring to their job are valued and everyone works together with a common purpose towards agreed upon goals.

Presentation will discuss the following topics:

  • Overview of Today's Diversity: Definitions, Benefits, and Commonalities
  • Challenges to Build Bridges to Inclusions: Define a "One Workforce" Organization and Develop a Framework/Guide for Engagement
  • Grow a "One Workforce" Organization: Create an Inclusive and Accepting Culture, Support Organizational Change, and Motivate Entire Staff to Participate/Promote D&I
  • Understand that today’s view of diversity is broader in definition and more varied in its characteristics that are an advantage to the organization.

Learning Objectives:
1. Have the knowledge and tools to begin developing a process for establishing shared goals that can lead to a One Workforce organization.
2. Build strong inclusive linkages that strengthen organization’s mission and culture
3. Increase understanding that differences can be compatible, provide support, and enrich working experience of team/project work.

Sylvia Ramirez Benatti has more than 20 years experience in the nonprofit sector as a trainer/consultant and university professor in nonprofit management. She is the co-author of Creating a Mentoring Program: Mentoring Partnerships across the Generations (ASTD Press 2014). Benatti wrote the diversity plan for the degree program in which she teaches and co-presented on generational diversity in the workplace at the 2014 ATD International Conference & Expo. She is certified as a Standards of Excellence consultant. She has produced and hosted the Nonprofit Edge, a weekly interview show on the University’s cable station. As Director of Training for the Support Center of Washington, DC she managed all aspects of a full time public training program with an average of 60 workshops per quarter. She holds a doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership in Nonprofits from Nova Southeastern University, and master’s in Training & Professional Development from Mount Vernon College, an affiliate school of George Washington University.

Annabelle Reitman, a career management strategist, co-authored Creating a Mentoring Program: Mentoring Partnerships Across the Generations (ASTD Press, 2014), and Career Moves: Be Strategic About Your Future, 3rd edition (ASTD Press 2013). Reitman, an established writer and author in the career and talent management arena, contributed a Learning Strategy, “Generational Communication Awareness” for 101 More Ways to Make Training Active by Elaine Biech (Wiley 2015) and the Career Development Chapter for the ASTD Handbook (2014). She writes for blogs, including a three post series on generations in the workplace (10/14-1/15) for the ATD Career Management Community’s blog. For over 6 years, Reitman has been writing the Career Pathways Column for The Transition Network, an association for professional women over 50.

With more than 40 years of experience in career coaching and counseling, she specializes in short-term coaching for people in work/career transitions as well as resume development targeting clients’ individualized professional stories. Her speaking engagements have included ATD’s Conferences, international and local professional organizations, and webnairs. She is a past president and co-president of the ATD Metro DC Chapter and past president of the Association of Career Professionals International (ACPI) DC Chapter. Reitman received her Ed.D in Higher Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University
