New OD Practitioners SIG

Topic: Polarity Thinking and Approach:  A Meta-theory for Consultant/Coaches to Use for Organizations, Teams, and Leaders

Facilitator: Cliff Kayser

Program:

There is an important distinction to make between problems that can be solved and ongoing and unsolvable issues that business literature refers to as dilemmas, paradox, wicked problems – or polarities. Cliff Kayser, VP, Owner/Partner of Polarity Partnerships will share how these unavoidable and unsolvable interdependent value pairs are predictable energy systems that can be leveraged. Distinguishing problems to solve from polarities to leverage is of crucial importance in today’s complex and changing environment and a key competency for leaders, teams, and organizations. The research is clear -- leaders, teams and organizations that effectively leverage polarity tensions outperform those that don’t.

In this highly interactive and experiential session, Cliff will bring a “HOW TO” practice-focus to the theory to:

1) Provide a high-level overview of the “basics for leverage” to achieve goals with increased speed and sustainability;
2) Help you avoid the dysfunction, wasted resources, and damaged relationships that result from treating polarities as problems to solve;
3) Work through some leadership and team/organizational polarity tensions in real-time using the Polarity Map.

Attendees to this session are asked to take a short 24-question, 5-10 minute survey in advance of the meeting by the COB on February 5.  Contact Mark at ma.sachs@verizon.net for access to the survey.
