Program:
In recent years, a growing number of community development organizations around the country have started to make a shift from a traditional form of community organizing practice, which has roots in the union organizing model, to a more loosely affiliated network based organizing model.   Two of these organizations leading the move towards the network centric model of organizing are IMPACT Silver Spring <http://www.impactsilverspring.org>  and Lawrence Community Works <http://www.lcworks.org> .   In context of rapidly urbanizing and diversifying communities, the network centric organizing model offers strategies for optimizing the exchange of value in a place based community, leading to increased participation of individuals in community life at multiple levels – social, civic and economic.

The presenters will use the experiences of IMPACT Silver Spring and Lawrence Community Works to share the role of the organizer in context of a network centric model for community development. From an OD perspective, this is a great opportunity to:
  • Explore the implications of this shift on organizational development and
  • Learn some of the limitations of the current funding culture and the nonprofit organizational frame.
