"Mindfulness at Work: Why Western Companies Embrace an Eastern Practice"

Discover how the ability to be mindful is directly relevant to increasing workplace effectiveness.

Presenter: Michelle Somerday

Program Description: The traditionally Eastern practice of mindfulness is becoming common in Western business settings. A number of Fortune 500 organizations such as General Mills, Apple, Prudential, eBay, Aetna, Target, Proctor & Gamble, Google, and even the U.S. Marines offer mindfulness programs, often as part of leadership development programs. So what is mindfulness, and what are the benefits to employees and leaders of being mindful?

This session will define “mindfulness” and explain how mindfulness is at the heart of the development of new workplace skills such as leadership abilities. In addition, neuroscience research will be reviewed to show that while we are not naturally mindful, mindfulness is something that can be cultivated and sustained, as demonstrated by observed changes in the brain. Other documented benefits of regular mindfulness practice, such as higher emotional intelligence, will also be discussed. Audience members will partake in interactive exercises to engage in the experience of mindfulness.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the definition of mindfulness, including what it means to be mindful at work, and the neuroscience that demonstrates how mindfulness effects changes to the brain and brain activity.
2. Discover how the ability to be mindful is directly relevant to the development of new leadership abilities and workplace skills.
3. Explore via experiential exercises what it means to be mindful and how to increase your ability to be mindful in a workplace setting.
